YUKON, OK – A 26-year-old man in connection with a fatal fiery crash that killed four people last Friday, May 22, has since been confirmed to have an illegal status in the U.S.
This is a second update in connection with the story we first covered last Friday, May 22. The Oklahoma Department of Public Safety commissioner told Koco5 that they are working with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials on the case.
The commissioner said the suspect was given a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status in 2015 and granted a work authorization permit. He noted that the suspect has no prior criminal record.
The Back Story: The 26-year-old man was reportedly driving west on eastbound I-40 and crashed head-on into another vehicle. One of the vehicles caught on fire, and the driver and three passengers of the second vehicle died from their injuries.
The second driver was identified as a 20-year-old woman, one passenger as an 18-year-old woman, a second passenger as a 19-year-old man, and a third passenger as a man, who was 18 or 19. All three passengers were El Reno Public Schools alumni.
The four victims were honored at a Memorial Day vigil at Lake Reno, according to OKCFOX.
Authorities said they later found several empty bottles of alcohol in the suspect’s vehicle and confirmed he was left in critical condition and sent to a hospital. He was released, and OHP booked him into the Canadian County Jail on Sunday. He is being charged with four counts of second-degree murder, two counts of DUI causing great bodily injury, possessing a firearm with an altered ID during the commission of a felony, carrying firearms while under the influence, and driving the wrong way on a one-way road.
