NORTHWEST OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – Two people died, and two others were injured in a street racing crash that happened in Northwest Oklahoma City last month, News9 reports.
The collision occurred last week on Sunday, May 24. Police said a 32-year-old man, who was suspected of impairment, was racing another car on eastbound Northwest 39th Street near Portland Avenue when he rear-ended an SUV.
The impact of the rear-end crash caused the SUV to overturn. Two out of those seven SUV occupants, a 62-year-old woman and her 12-year-old grandson, were ejected.
EMS crews rushed the woman and the boy to a hospital, where they later died. The 12-year-old boy’s 10-year-old sister and his mother were also hospitalized. The girl is in the intensive care unit, and the mother is recovering from a traumatic head injury, according to the boy’s father, who also survived and did not appear to be injured.
Police said they found the 32-year-old man on the ground, who was also sent to a hospital. Upon his release, police booked him into the Oklahoma County Detention Center.
The suspect was charged with three counts of DUI, second-degree murder, driving without a valid driver’s license, and reckless driving. He was also penalized for street racing, fined $2,000, and faces a 90-day car impoundment.
Locals noted that Northwest 39th Street is a popular place for street racing, especially among young adults, and unfortunately, where deadly crashes have occurred because of the racing. Police have recently cracked down on the number of racers and crowds gathered for these events. In addition, in 2025, city officials passed a strict ordinance in the hopes of reducing the number of fatal collisions caused by racing.
