YUKON, OK – A Yukon daycare caught on fire as a result of a vehicle collision that happened on Friday, according to News9.
A driver lost control of their vehicle and crashed into the La Petite Academy located on West Reno Road. The commercial fire alarm was activated, and fire crews rushed to the scene.
Firefighters removed the driver from their vehicle and evacuated the 33 children and 5 adults who were inside the building at the time.
The fire spread rapidly across the roof due to the TPO roofing material and limited roof access, but firefighters were able to contain and put out the fire by means of an aerial stream. Fire crews confirmed the fire ignited after the driver crashed into a building structure located around an electrical meter.
Utility companies also arrived at the scene and shut off gas and electricity when it was safe to do so.
All 33 children and the 5 adults were spared from injuries, while one firefighter sustained a wrist injury. The firefighter was taken to a hospital for treatment.
As for the day care itself, the damages are estimated to be well over $1 million. Daycare personnel will be working for the next few weeks on the necessary repairs and additional next steps, according to a public statement.
